Liu Fang is now home under the care of her father who decided against sending her to the county hospital because of high costs. Instead, she will be transported to the local hospital in her township once the muddy roads due to recent bad weather dry up. Her father (who won't be returning to work in Jiangsu) is now the primary caretaker. After a long absence from home, Liu Fang is in good spirits to see her little brother and friends.

  3. Liu Fang will be discharged from West China Hospital on Dec. 29 after which she'll receive treatment for bed sores at her hometown hospital in Nanbu County. The government sponsored treatment for quake victims officially ends some six months after China's worst earthquake in recent decades.

  4. Any medical experts out there to comments and/or give suggestions on the best long-term treatment of spinal chord injury (T6 vertebrae fracture)?

  5. Nian donated a laptop computer to Liu Fang. We are trying to figure out a way to deliver it to her.

  6. LIU FANG is recovering well after a surgery to remove bedsores on her back last Wednesday, Sept 10, according to our friend Lan. Her father landed work in Jiangsu and will be leaving shortly. Liu's grandmother will be the primary caretaker at West China (Huaxi) Hospital where she has been provided care by the government until year-end.

  7. LIU FANG is a special case in that she is not an amputee child but a parapalegic. She injured her spinal chord after falling down a slope in the aftershock on May 27 outside her school. She did not speak nor engage in eye contact with Hong, our main Chengdu coordinator, during the first visit at Huaxi Hospital of Sichuan University. Her care has fallen on her father, a migrant worker who's also raising her nine-yr-old brother and supporting aging grandparents. Fang's mother died after battling cancer before the quake.

In the weeks since our first meeting, we are happy to report that Liu Fang has opened up emotionally. (video clip coming soon) We have been in discussion with her doctors as well as doctors elsewhere in regards to long-term treatment.
